A 66-metre limestone arch over Cedar Creek, the remnant roof of a collapsed cave passage, and one of the first tourist sights in America. Jefferson bought it and 157 acres from George III in 1774 and called it the most sublime of nature’s works; George Washington is supposed to have surveyed it and there are initials cut high on the wall that people have long attributed to him. Monacan tradition holds it as sacred. It is a state park now, and US 11 still runs across the top of it, which most people driving over never notice.
