The capital of New Sweden, founded in 1638 where two rivers meet
Sweden had a colony in North America and this was its capital. Fort Christina went up in 1638 at the confluence of the Brandywine and the Christina, about a mile east of what is now downtown Wilmington and two miles up from where the Christina meets the Delaware. It was named for Christina, Queen of Sweden, and it was the first Swedish settlement on the continent. Most people can name the English colonies and the Spanish ones. Far fewer can name this one, which is exactly why it is worth standing on.
