Kit Carson’s post on the worst stretch of the Cimarron Cut-off
A short-lived fortification out in Cimarron County, about three miles northwest of Wheeless, put up by New Mexico and California volunteers under Colonel Kit Carson. Its job was to guard travellers on the most dangerous stretch of the Cimarron Cut-off of the Santa Fe Trail, where Kiowa and Comanche raids were a constant. It did not last long. Out in that country almost nothing did.
