A canyon so tight the town, the railroad and the creek shared it

A ghost town in Shoshone County established in 1887, in a canyon so narrow the buildings, the railroad and the creek all had to share it. Silver, lead and zinc built the place, and the Hercules silver mine here put its owners in the middle of the Idaho mining wars of 1899. The Hecla and Star mines worked out of Burke too. The mid-twentieth century closed the mines one after another and the town went with them.
