A coal town rebuilt as open steel outlines of the buildings that stood there

A Stearns Coal and Lumber company town on the bank of the Big South Fork of the Cumberland, where the mines opened in 1937 and worked until December 1962. What stands there now is unusual: rather than rebuild the houses, the Park Service put up open steel frames where the buildings were, so you walk through the shapes of the tipple, the church, the school and the homes with the river through the gaps. It is an interpretive area inside the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area.
