One of the first British outposts west of the Appalachians, built 1756
A British fort in what is now Monroe County, thrown up between 1756 and 1757 to hold Cherokee support at the opening of the French and Indian War, and one of the first serious British outposts west of the Appalachians. John William Gerard de Brahm designed it, Captain Raymond Demeré supervised the building of it, and his brother commanded the garrison. Being first over the mountains is a harder job than it sounds.
