In March 1910 an avalanche swept two snowbound trains off the rails at Wellington and killed ninety-six people, the deadliest avalanche in American history. The town was renamed, then abandoned; the Iron Goat Trail now walks the old grade past the snowshed ruins, and hikers tell the stories you would expect a place like this to earn.
