The Carleton County Gaol ran in Ottawa from 1862 to 1972 in grim conditions and hanged its prisoners in the yard, among them Patrick Whelan for the assassination of a Father of Confederation. It is a backpackers’ hostel now, and you can sleep in a former cell on death row; it is regularly named one of the most haunted buildings in Canada, gallows and all.
