One of the great free digs in America. The Whistler Springs beds sit high on the Ochoco National Forest northeast of Prineville, and the eggs come out with cores of blue-grey agate, moss agate and sometimes clear chalcedony you can read newsprint through. It is a dig, not a surface hunt: bring a mattock, a pry bar and a saw at home, because a thunderegg is an ugly knobbly ball until you cut it. FREE on National Forest ground under the recreational-collecting rule. High-clearance road, and the last miles hold snow well into June.
