Nova Scotia had real gold rushes. From 1861 the Meguma slate-and-quartz belt along the Eastern Shore gave up over a million ounces at camps like Goldenville, Sherbrooke and Waverley, worked from quartz veins and the streams below them. The mines are long closed, but the province still allows recreational gold panning on Crown land, and the old districts are quiet, beautiful coast now. A little-known chapter: the Maritimes were gold country too.
