Southern Indiana geodes

Geodes (quartz, calcite)

The hills of south-central Indiana, around the Lawrence and Monroe County limestone, weather out geodes that rival Iowa’s famous Keokuk stones, hollow spheres lined with quartz, calcite, dolomite and sometimes rarer crystals. They tumble out of the creek beds after rain. Much of the ground is PRIVATE farmland, so ask, and work the public creek gravels; the Bloomington rock shops know the country.
