The largest deep-hole dimension-granite quarry in the world, six hundred feet down into grey Barre granite that has been cut here since the 1880s and stands in cemeteries and public buildings across the country. The visitor centre runs a tour to the rim where you look down at derricks lifting hundred-ton blocks, and there is a granite bowling lane outside you are allowed to play. Barre’s Hope Cemetery, carved by the quarry workers for themselves, is one of the most extraordinary places in New England. PUBLIC tours in season.
