A wooded hill in Litchfield County with the bones of a 19th-century industrial venture still standing in it: iron mine adits, a granite quarry, roasting ovens and the stone furnace, all preserved as a public nature preserve by the Roxbury Land Trust. Garnet occurs in the schist here and the site is a Connecticut mineral classic. Walk the interpreted trail past the sealed adits. PUBLIC preserve; the mine openings are gated for bat protection and safety, so admire them from outside.
