Erzgebirge silver & the Freiberg mines

Silver, tin, fluorite, cobalt

The Ore Mountains on the German-Czech border are the birthplace of European mining science: silver from 1168 built the towns, the word “dollar” descends from the Joachimsthaler minted here, and the miners’ names for troublesome ores gave us “cobalt” (the goblin Kobold) and “nickel” (Old Nick). Dozens of show mines are open across the UNESCO mining region. PUBLIC show mines, Saxony/Bohemia.
