The Sedlec Ossuary

Czechia · Kutná Hora, Czech Republic

A small chapel under the Cemetery Church of All Saints at Kutná Hora holding the bones of somewhere between forty and seventy thousand people. In 1870 the Schwarzenberg family hired a woodcarver, František Rint, to do something with them, and he arranged the lot: four great bell-shaped mounds in the corners, garlands of skulls across the vault, the family coat of arms rendered in bone, and a chandelier said to contain at least one of every bone in the human body. He signed his work by the entrance, in bone. Over 200,000 people a year come. Check the current photography rules before you go, they have tightened.
