A great gaping mouth of a cave in the limestone bluff right on the bank of the Ohio River in southern Illinois, 55 feet wide. For decades around 1800 it was a river-pirate lair: the Harpe brothers and Samuel Mason and their gangs used it to ambush the flatboats floating down to the Mississippi, one of the most genuinely lawless spots on the early frontier. It is a peaceful state park now, and you can walk right into the cave. PUBLIC, Hardin County, Illinois.
