Carlsbad Caverns

New Mexico

One of the deepest and most spectacular cave systems on Earth, dissolved out of a fossil reef by sulphuric acid rather than ordinary groundwater, which is why it is so vast. You walk in through the natural entrance down 750 feet, or ride the elevator, into the Big Room, a single chamber the size of many football fields hung with immense formations. At dusk in summer, hundreds of thousands of Brazilian free-tailed bats pour out of the mouth. The nearby Lechuguilla is one of the longest and most beautiful caves in the world but is closed to all but science. PUBLIC national park, New Mexico.
