A vast limestone cave system in Malaysia, 400 million years old, reached by 272 painted steps guarded by a 42-metre golden statue of Murugan, and one of the most important Hindu shrines outside India, the heart of the Thaipusam festival when over a million pilgrims come. The Cathedral Cave is a single enormous chamber open to the sky at one end. Free and PUBLIC (dress respectfully; the macaques will rob you), near Kuala Lumpur.
