Thailand’s Chanthaburi is one of the great gem centres of the world: the local mines are largely worked out, but the town became the planet’s hub for cutting, heating and trading coloured stones, and on weekends its gem market fills with dealers spreading rubies and sapphires on white paper on folding tables. Nearly every ruby and sapphire you have ever seen passed through here. PUBLIC market, Chanthaburi.
