A village that picked itself up off the floodplain and moved uphill
A village in Monroe County that is not where it used to be. Valmeyer was built down in the American Bottom, the Mississippi floodplain, and it now sits on higher land to the east. Moving a whole town uphill is a rare thing to see on a map, and the old site and the new one are both still legible on the ground.
