The spirit of Devils Lake

North Dakota · Ramsey County
The spirit of Devils Lake
NASA · Public domain · source

The Dakota called it Mni Wak’an, the spirit water, for a lake with no outlet whose level rises and falls without obvious reason. Early settlers mistranslated it as Devils Lake and the name stuck. It has risen more than thirty feet since the 1990s, swallowing roads and farms, which has done nothing to weaken the older name’s reputation.
