Horace Tabor made a silver fortune at Leadville, left his wife for Baby Doe, and lost everything when silver crashed in 1893. His last words were said to be a instruction to hang on to the Matchless. She did, living in a shack at the mine for thirty-five years until she froze to death there in 1935. The headframe still stands above Leadville at over ten thousand feet, and it is open to visitors.
