The oldest carousel in America where the horses swing on chains
It stands at Watch Hill in Westerly and it is the oldest operating carousel in the United States on which the horses hang from chains rather than standing on poles, which means they swing outward as the ride turns. Rhode Island has two carousels listed as National Historic Landmarks, this one and the Crescent Park Looff Carousel over at East Providence. For a state this size that is a remarkable ratio of merry-go-rounds to national landmarks.
