More than three thousand standing stones in rows across the Breton countryside, put up around 3300 BC with some possibly as early as 4500 BC, which makes this the largest concentration of megaliths anywhere. They come in three great alignments: Ménec, eleven converging rows over 1,165 by 100 metres; Kermario, 1,029 stones in ten columns running about 1,300 metres; and Kerlescan, 555 stones in thirteen lines over roughly 800 metres. Nobody knows what the rows are for and the honest answer is that four thousand years is a long time to hold onto a reason. Since 1991 the main rows have been fenced to let the ground recover, with access by organised tour, though they open up in winter. UNESCO listed the Carnac megaliths in 2025 along with 550 other monuments across 28 towns in Morbihan.
