The beach where Mary Anning, working from a shop in town in the early 1800s, found the first recognised ichthyosaur and the first complete plesiosaur, and effectively invented the trade of fossil collecting while being denied credit for most of it. The cliffs still shed ammonites onto the beach with every storm. Collecting loose material from the foreshore is allowed and encouraged under a local code; digging into the cliffs is not, and the cliffs fall without warning. UNESCO World Heritage.
