Enormous dark monoliths standing straight out of the savanna on the Cacuso plateau, millions of years old, in four groups: western, south, north and southeast. The western group is the one people visit. Carved footprints in the rock are held by local tradition to be those of Queen Ana de Sousa Ginga, the monarch of Ndongo who fought the Portuguese for decades. Pungo Andongo was the kingdom’s last capital, and in 1671 the Portuguese besieged and took it, enslaved many of the people in it and ended the kingdom. The ruins of the fortress they built afterwards are still in the town. Malanje Province, Angola.
