Old lava flows on the south coast of Savai’i left tubes running from a flat clifftop of lava rock down to the sea, and every few seconds the swell drives into the bottom of one and fires a column of water straight up out of the rock. Villagers from Taga will throw a coconut into a hole so you can watch it launched a long way into the air. Say it plainly: the rock around the vents is wet and slippery and falling into one would almost certainly kill you, so keep back from the lips and watch where you put your feet. The land is under customary ownership like most land in Samoa, so the village charges a small fee at the gate. A coastal track heads west from here to the old village of Fagaloa.
