Sleepy Hollow and the Headless Horseman

Washington Irving set his 1820 tale in this real village on the Hudson, where a Hessian trooper decapitated by a cannonball rides the night roads hunting for his head. The old Dutch burying ground and the bridge over the Pocantico are real places you can walk, and the town legally renamed itself Sleepy Hollow in 1996. Irving himself lies buried in the cemetery here.
