An Abenaki village on the Kennebec, caught between two empires
Norridgewock, Nanrantsouak in Abenaki, was both a village and a band of the Abenaki, the People of the Dawn, holding the interior of Maine along the Kennebec. The French called the place Kennebec and treated the west bank of the river as the edge of Acadia. The British claimed the same ground, and the village sat in the middle of that argument right through the colonial wars. Archaeology has turned up several sites for it; the last, where the Jesuit Sebastien Rale kept his mission, is called Old Point and lies just along the river at Madison.
