Named for an Arnold flagstaff, dismantled and drowned in 1950
Benedict Arnold camped here on the march to Quebec and put up a flagstaff, which is where the name came from. The town that grew around it was dismantled and legally disincorporated in 1950 so that a hydroelectric dam could go on the Dead River, and the water that rose behind that dam is Flagstaff Lake. The settlement is underneath it. Maine has a habit of this: the map says lake, and the ground under the lake says town.
