Six storeys of tin elephant, built in 1881 to sell real estate
Six storeys of elephant, framed in wood and clad in tin, put up in 1881 at Margate City because James V. Lafferty wanted to sell real estate and worked out that nobody drives past an elephant. It worked. Lucy is the oldest surviving roadside tourist attraction in America, which makes her the ancestor of every giant fibreglass creature on every highway in the country. She is a building rather than a statue, and she has been standing on that beach for well over a century.
