The upper Missouri’s great fur post, rebuilt on its own ground
From 1829 to 1867 this was the most important fur trading post on the upper Missouri, standing about two miles from where the Yellowstone runs into the Missouri, on the Dakota side of the state line and 25 miles from Williston. What stands now is a partial reconstruction. The site was named a National Historic Landmark in 1961, among the very first, which tells you how central this ground was to the trade that opened the northern plains.
