The biggest post on the northern plains, and the buffalo went out through it

Pierre Chouteau Jr of St. Louis put this trading post up on the west bank of the Missouri in 1832, and for years it was the largest on the northern Great Plains, the point everything passed through. What passed through it mostly was buffalo fur, shipped out by the ton, which tells you in one sentence what was happening to the herds. It ran until the 1850s.
