The first army post west of the Missouri, and it lasted eight years
The first United States Army post west of the Missouri, put up in 1819 just east of what is now Fort Calhoun and abandoned in 1827. It held soldiers, traders and trappers, and for those eight years it was the furthest edge of organised American presence in the Louisiana Purchase. The site is a National Historic Landmark and a state historical park, with a replica fort built on the ground through the 1980s and 1990s.
