A pueblo on the Kansas plains, built by people running from Spain

The stone outline of a seven-room pueblo on the High Plains of western Kansas, a long way from the Rio Grande. Taos people fled here in 1664 to escape Spanish rule and lived among the Plains Apache until a Spanish expedition under Juan de Archuleta took them home; Picuris refugees did the same in 1696 and were rounded up in their turn. The Villazur expedition stopped here on its way north to disaster near the forks of the Platte. By the 1730s Comanche, Ute and Pawnee raids had broken the Cuartelejo Apache, and the survivors went south to join the Jicarilla at Pecos. Kansas Historical Society archaeologists restored the outline in 1971, and it is a National Historic Landmark. PUBLIC, inside Lake Scott State Park.
