Forty tons of carved sandstone and centuries of argument about who cut it

Forty tons of sandstone that sat in the bed of the Taunton River at Berkley, in what used to be the town of Dighton, covered in petroglyphs: lines, geometric shapes, schematic drawings of people, and writing, some of it verified as writing and some of it argued over. The carvings are ancient and nobody agrees who made them. That argument has run for centuries and has been claimed for the Norse, the Portuguese, the Phoenicians and the people who were already here, which tells you more about the claimants than the rock.
