Sixteen thousand square kilometres of primary rainforest, montane and lowland, with essentially nobody in it. Suriname put three older reserves together in 1998 with Conservation International and ended up protecting 1.6 million hectares in one piece, which is why UNESCO listed it in 2000 for its pristine forest. Over five thousand plant species, jaguar, giant armadillo, eight kinds of monkey and the Guiana cock-of-the-rock. Rising out of the canopy is the Voltzberg, a bald granite dome 245 metres high, hot and bare on top and carrying plants that grow nowhere but on rock like that. Sipaliwini District, Suriname.
