The Mazaruni gravels of Guyana carry both diamonds and gold, worked since the 1880s by “porkknockers,” independent miners who go into the interior for months at a time with a shovel, a sluice and a batel. Guyanese diamonds are small but often very clean. The work is genuinely hazardous and mercury is the standing problem. Buy through Georgetown’s licensed dealers.
