The first European settlement on the Mississippi, 1686

The first European settlement anywhere along the Mississippi, established in 1686 by Henri de Tonti on behalf of Louis XIV, for the purpose of trading with the Quapaw Nation. The French held it, then the Spanish, then the Americans, which is most of the history of the lower Mississippi compressed into one riverbank. It is a National Memorial now.
