On a low mound in northern Lithuania stand somewhere over a hundred thousand crosses, left by pilgrims since the 1831 uprising. The Soviet authorities bulldozed the hill at least three times, in 1961, 1973 and 1975, and each time people crept back at night and planted more, which makes it one of the most quietly defiant places in Europe.
