Portlock, Arrulaaik in Sugpiaq, is a ghost town on the southern edge of the Kenai Peninsula about sixteen miles below Seldovia, and it is famous for the wrong reason. The story you will be told is that the village emptied because of Nantiinaq, a forest spirit that gets filed alongside Bigfoot. Worth knowing before you go: those accounts surfaced decades later, in the 2000s. The records say the post office closed between 1950 and 1951, and that Portlock emptied the way a lot of Alaskan places did, because Alaska Route 1 went in along the other side of the peninsula and the road is where people went. None of which makes it less worth reaching. It makes it a real abandoned village with a modern legend grown over the top of it.
