Fourteen storeys of red mill buildings standing in the Wrangell Mountains at the foot of a glacier, and the richest concentrated copper deposit ever found: some of the ore ran over 70 per cent copper, which is almost unheard of. Between 1911 and 1938 it produced enormous wealth, then the ore ran out and the last train left, and people simply walked away leaving furniture and papers. It is now inside Wrangell-St Elias, the largest national park in the United States, and the buildings are being stabilised rather than restored. PUBLIC, reached by a long gravel road.
