Olavinlinna castle

Savonlinna (Finland)

A three-towered stone castle standing on a rock in the water at Savonlinna, built in 1475 to hold the Swedish-Russian frontier, and the northernmost medieval stone fortress still standing. Its stories include a walled-up maiden and a black ram whose ghost is said to guard the castle. It hosts a famous opera festival in its courtyard now, which is its own kind of haunting. PUBLIC guided tours, Finland.
