New England’s last vampire panic, and it is documented rather than whispered. Consumption took the Brown family one by one; in March 1892 the villagers dug up three of them looking for the one that would not decay. The doctor present recorded that Mercy had decayed exactly as she should have. They burned her heart anyway, fed the ashes to her brother, and he died two months later. Her stone is still here, beside the 1838 church.
