What began in 1839 as the Wayne County poorhouse grew into a small city: 78 buildings, its own farm, fire department, bakery and power plant, and at its peak in the 1930s more than ten thousand patients in the psychiatric division. It ran a cemetery with over seven thousand numbered graves and no names. Most of the complex is gone; the Kay Beard building remains and now runs public tours and investigations. Whatever you think about the ghosts, the history here is genuinely heavy.
