Centralia, the town on fire

Centralia (Columbia County, PA)

A coal town in the Pennsylvania anthracite country where a mine fire lit in 1962 got down into the seams and never went out. It still burns, sixty years on, venting smoke and swallowing ground; the state condemned the town and moved almost everyone out, leaving a grid of empty streets going back to weeds over a fire that could burn another century. The graffiti-covered stretch of old Route 61 nearby is a pilgrimage.
