Montana territory started here, and so did its most famous crime story: sheriff Henry Plummer robbed the roads he was sworn to guard and hanged on his own gallows in 1864. The town stands preserved as a state park, and the Meade Hotel and the gallows hill carry the stories you would expect. Grasshopper Creek below town still pans color.
