Ethiopia rewrote the opal market. Opal was found in volcanic ash beds in Wollo (Welo) province around 2008, hydrophane opal that plays every colour and, unusually, can absorb water and turn temporarily clear. Ethiopia is now one of the largest opal producers on Earth, mined largely by hand in small hillside adits. Buy through the Addis Ababa and international trade; ask about treatment.
