Lalibela, the rock-hewn churches

Ethiopia

Eleven medieval churches carved DOWN into solid volcanic rock in the Ethiopian highlands in the 12th-13th centuries, connected by tunnels and trenches, the most famous, Bete Giyorgis, cut as a perfect cross sunk into the ground. They are not ruins: they are living churches, still in daily use by Ethiopian Orthodox Christians, and a UNESCO World Heritage site. PUBLIC (a sacred site; remove shoes, dress modestly), Ethiopia.
