Utah’s state gem weathers out of the rhyolite here as sherry-coloured crystals that fade to clear in the sun, and you can collect them free on the open BLM ground in Topaz Valley by cracking the lined cavities in the rock or screening the wash below. The same volcanic field, in the Wah Wah Mountains nearby, is the only place on Earth that has produced gem red beryl. PUBLIC (BLM) for the topaz, Juab County; the red beryl claims are PRIVATE.
